Calcite is formed in water and is very soft.
Calcite in it's most common shape is the three dimensional parallelogram called a rhomboid. A rhomboid has six parallel planes all connected to each other.
These stones are one of the most abundant types of crystal found on the planet, and there is a some of this stone found in many continents of the world. It is also found mixed with other stones, or you may find other minerals as inclusions in Calcite.
Large deposits of this stone are found in Mexico, and this is where many of the range of bright colored Calcite Crystals come from.
“Dalmatian Stone,” also called “Dalmatian Jasper,” is a white to cream-colored material with black spots that is produced in Chihuahua, Mexico. It reminds people of the Dalmatian breed of dogs – and that is where it gets its name. It is very easily polished to a bright luster and is a familiar semi-precious stone that is cut into beads, spheres, cabochons and carvings.
The name Carnelian, which is derived from Carne, Latin for flesh, may be related to its color, which is similar the color of flesh. Carnelian is frequently known as a stone of great spirituality. Carnelian was one of the most treasured stones of both the Greeks and Romans, who used it in signet rings and carvings.
